The story behind the Marlboro brand name
Actually, this cigarette has been around since 1924, but in the spelling "Marlborough" as a particularly mild women's cigarette. It was named after Great Marlborough Street in London's Soho district, where tobacco entrepreneur Philip Morris built his first small factory in 1881. The street was named after the 1st Duke of Marlborough. By the way, his full name was John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, 1st Prince of Mindelheim, 1st Count of Nellenburg, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire.
