Smoking can contribute to the formation of fat deposits
Researchers from Vanderbilt University used computed tomography to study subcutaneous fat deposits, fat deposits around the abdomen and internal organs in 3,020 middle-aged participants. These volunteers participated in the long-term CARDIA study. It turned out that smokers have more fat in smokers. Smokers also showed higher amounts of visceral fat (which is deposited around internal organs) compared to those who had never smoked. Those participants in the study who quit smoking had intermediate levels of visceral and intramuscular fat. Such body fat can lead to cardiovascular problems and type 2 diabetes.
